Vejer de la Frontera

After Seville we drove south to Vejer de la Frontera, which is a beautiful all-white town perched up on a hill. It's not on the coast but you get a great view of some wind farms from the edges of town. We spent some time wandering around town, getting lost on all the identical streets surrounded by white buildings. It was fun. It's a cute town and it has a lot of really good restaurants in it so it's a very worthwhile place to use as your base for other sightseeing. We used it as our base and traveled to Morocco on a day trip and also spent a day at Barrosa beach which is about 20 minutes to the north of Vejer de la Frontera.

The first picture below is the view from our hotel room. I took several pictures of it in different weather conditions and different light. The rest of the pictures were taken just wandering around town. I'd recommend at least a one-night stay in this town to a) enjoy at least one of the great restaurants there and b) get lost on all the little winding streets. Our hotel restaurant was called La Califa and we also had a great dinner at a restaurant called Los Quatro Gatos. We stopped at random places throughout town for lunch and everything we ate was excellent.

Now for some pictures of Barrosa beach. We hadn't planned to go to it, we had planned to spend the day in Cadiz and go to a beach there after touring the city but the highway into Cadiz was shut down for some reason so we turned around and hit the first beach we came to on our way back to Vejer and Barrosa was it. It's dotted with restaurants that make great salads (and obviously have great views, as you can see in the pic of Martin and his beer, below) and it's the perfect beach for a nice long walk.

One night we ate at the restaurant in our hotel, which I think has a michelin star. It served a lot of great Moroccan and middle eastern foods. Below is a pastela, which is a flaky pastry crust topped with some powdered sugar and cinnamon and filled with chicken and lots of yummy spices. Not hot spices but flavorful ones. I'm not sure what, definitely some turmeric. I had one of these in Morocco too and while it was good in Spain it was like heaven in Morocco. I know you're probably all thinking it's sweet because of the bit of sugar on top but it's really not, all the flavors are very complementary.

This is the hotel cat. She was a mush. She'd sit on your lap all day and let you pet her. She was also a serious beggar at breakfast until somebody from one of the tables would give her some ham.
