Frankenstein

Don't get too excited, Frankenstein is a small town in the hills to the west of Bad Dürkheim. Once I learned that there was a town named Frankenstein only a 20ish minute drive away from us, I had to go see it. Of course since it's summer we instead drove most of the way there and then hiked the rest of the way to it. Martin planned out a nice little hike in the forest that took us in a big loop to a restaurant on Lake Isenach and then up to Frankenstein and back to our car. 10 miles total, but we made it 11 with wrong turns ... we always take at least a few wrong turns the forests here have so many trails in them it's easy to go the wrong way.

So, some pictures. Lots of dense forest and some streams.

The restaurant on Lake Isenach. You could rent boats here to hang out on the lake in plus there was a big playground for the kids to entertain themselves.

Back into the forest! The picture on the right below is a house in the middle of the forest that used to be where the glass blower lived.

The itty bitty town of Frankenstein. Pretty much just a busy road with a few houses on each side of it. And a castle! Well, castle ruins.

After we finished the hike we went back to Lake Isenach for a post-hike wine schorle. We didn't get a schorle earlier in the hike because we passed the restaurant at like 10:30 in the morning and weren't hungry or thirsty yet.

Mmmmmm ... dirt. At least my blisters from two weeks ago have finally healed! And since I bought new hiking shoes to use today, I didn't get any new blisters so it was a very successful hike.

A Little Hike in the Pfälzerwald: Neidenfels - Lambertskreuz loop

Last weekend we decided to go for a little hike that started in the village of Neidenfels which is about 20 minutes from Bad Dürkheim by car. It was a 13km (8 mile) loop through the forest with a restaurant about 2/3 of the way around the loop at Lambertskreuz. We of course got lost, as we always do in the Pfälzerwald, and added a few extra miles to the loop but it was still a nice walk. There are so many trails in the forest here! It's so easy to wander down the wrong one and not realize you went the wrong way until a mile or so later at which point you have to backtrack.

Anyway, below are some pictures. Martin wanted you all to see that the flowers were as tall as he was. And, for my dad, a picture of a big woodpile.

Lunch - we packed our own sandwiches and snacks but bought wine schorles at the restaurant, of course.

Burgruine Neidenfels, overlooking the little hamlet of Neidenfels of course:

I wore my hiking boots and didn't lace them up tight enough ... it's a week after this happened now and these blisters still haven't healed!
