Here are almost all the (good) pictures we took of the northern lights during our week in Finland. We were lucky enough to have a G1 solar storm in the middle of our week AND clear skies. And the auroras on the nights before and after the storm were also decent. But on the night of the 14th we saw some brilliant northern lights. I'd say better than what we saw on our northern lights tour in 2016. It was totally worth spending hours outside in -6F temperatures.
Note the purple/red colors in a lot of our pictures, which we hadn't seen before. The purple/red colors are created at higher altitudes than the green and are more rare to see:
When the lights really get moving, using a long-exposure just kind of creates a bright blurry white-ish streak because they move so quickly and are so bright. When they're really bright, I think they can be captured even with an iPhone.
Looking straight up:
When the lights take up large portions of the sky, the pictures can become a kind of blur.
