Moving On

Once we left Savute-Under-Canvas, we boarded another tiny plane that made 4 stops on its way to Maun airport. That's four sweaty, bumpy stops. Then, we got to spend a few hours at the Maun airport. Here I am taking out my contacts in the one-room airport - I would have used the bathroom but it's a one-seater with no lock on the door with big spiders in it:

And, while I look clean in the above picture, I had never been so dirty in my life. Had you been near me, you would have smelled what I'm trying to relate to you. My clothes had been worn several times already, I had sweated the entire 4-plane-rides to Maun from Savute, and I hadn't showered yet so I was covered with the dirt and sand that makes up Savute. When I finally got to shower later in the day, as soon as I stepped under the water I smelled this horrible (elephant) manure and dirt smell come off of me. Best. Shower. Ever.

Then, we walked out to the one commercial jet that travels to/from Maun:

Then we flew to Jo'burg, where we spent the night. Originally we had planned to fly directly to Portugal that very night, but the flights got switched ... and spending that extra night in the airport hotel was the best thing that ever happened to us. We got to take long hot showers, eat a nice restaurant meal, check email, and hit the hotel gym for a few minutes to get in some cardio ... since neither of us had moved in over 2 weeks.

The next day we flew off to Lisbon via Mozambique. 14 long hours on a plane with only drop-down TV's in the middle of the plane! And during our 2.5-hour layover in Mozambique we were not allowed off of the plane so we just sat there and looked at the runway for awhile.

Once we arrived in Portugal, after a 3-hour late-night drive to Lagos, we RELAXED. We took all four of our full days there and sat on the beach and slept and read books and did absolutely nothing (but we went for long walks to get some exercise because it felt good to finally move around again). It was the relaxing part of the honeymoon. Finally!

Oh, and we treated Garmisch to some Amarula, a creamy African aperitif:
