Sailing around the Elafiti Islands

Croatia contains over 1,100 islands. You could spend years exploring them all. So we decided to make one of our day trips from Dubrovnik a sailing trip around the Elafiti islands. These islands are a small archipelago consisting of several islands stretching northwest of Dubrovnik, in the Adriatic sea. Only three of them are inhabited, of which we visited two - Lopud and Sipan. Lopud has a nice little beach where we dropped anchor for an hour or so and then we stopped at a small fishing village on Sipan for lunch.

As you can see, we had a gorgeous day for sailing. We hired a private boat and the 2 captains (skippers? drivers? Not sure what you call them) who manned the boat were very friendly and molded the day to be exactly what we wanted it to be. I would highly recommend using them if you ever want to sail for a day from Dubrovnik: http://www.dubrovnikdailysailing.com/. If you just want to sail around all day and not stop at any of the islands, or if you want to just sail to one island and spend the day there, they're perfectly happy to do that. The world is your oyster.

Here are some pics of sailing from Dubrovnik to Lopud:

This one makes me woozy because it's so crooked but it's hard to take a straight picture on a sailboat:

We dropped anchor near Lopud and swam around in the ocean. There was a nice beach there but we didn't feel the need to go sit on it. There were lots of other boats doing the same thing we did and people in the water all around.

Some pictures of the small fishing village on Sipan and our lunch of shrimp and mussels caught fresh that morning. The village was pretty deserted and only had two (very small) restaurants. My guess is all the fishermen are up before dawn fishing then are home in time for siesta.

After lunch we stopped at another spot for a swim. The rocks were neat.

Some more beautiful scenery.
