Mannheimer Weihnachtsmarkt
It's that time of year again - Christmas market season! Yesterday we explored the Mannheim Christmas market. It was a Sunday afternoon so it was pretty crowded. There are actually two markets in Mannheim, a bigger one with 200 booths around the water tower (Wasserturm) and another smaller one with mostly food booths about a quarter of a mile away in the pedestrian shopping zone.
We started off with some Glühwein, of course. In the second picture below with Martin is our friend Eric. He and his wife Kara were with us. They're also from the US - Kara's from Long Island so she's a fellow New Yorker.
You might think I'm taking a picture of a sketchy guy in a fun hat here ... but I was actually taking a picture of the sugar cones being melted into vats of Glühwein behind him. It's a delicacy here to caramelize sugar into Glühwein while pouring a stream of rum that's been set on fire into it. Some day we'll try it and I'll get better pictures of the process.
Next we stopped by Käthe Wohlfahrt, which is the big German Christmas store. We bought some ornaments, of course.
Some more booths:
And a few pictures of decorations. Stars hanging in the trees, lights along all the booths and buildings, etc.:
